The 6/10-week figures are processing targets, not the Bewilligungszeitraum — the ~12-month period the grant is then paid for. Only a substantially complete application starts the clock; missing documents delay it.
A complete first-time BAföG application (Erstantrag) typically takes about 6–10 weeks. The law (§ 51 BAföG) sets the office two targets: a decision within 6 weeks and the first payment within 10 weeks, both counted only from the point where the application is substantially complete. Follow-up applications (Folgeantrag) are usually faster at roughly 4–6 weeks.

If no decision comes within 6 weeks or no payment within 10, you can demand a provisional advance (Vorschuss) — but that is an escalation right, not the normal timeline.
