i-Kfz's "drive immediately" only works if you download the provisional proof within 30 minutes of issuance, and it requires BundID with online-ID (eID) or an ELSTER certificate — without those you are back in the appointment queue. Appointment waits vary enormously by district; the ADAC city figures date from a 2021 test.

Online (i-Kfz, nationwide since September 2023) a standard registration is processed the same day: the transport ministry states the car may be driven immediately on the provisional digital proof, with stamped plates and documents following by post within at most 10 days. Berlin currently reports about 2 working days of processing for the dealer channel.

More details

In person, the dominant cost is the appointment wait at the Zulassungsstelle: same-day to a few days in smaller districts, but commonly weeks in big cities — an ADAC test of state capitals found waits of up to 5 weeks.

How the process works

  1. 1Online (i-Kfz): register and drive the same day on the provisional proof
  2. 2Plates and documents arrive by post (max 10 days)
  3. 3In person: appointment wait decides — days in small towns, weeks in big cities ↑ the time on this page
  4. 4Counter procedure itself takes minutes
