How long does a German apprenticeship (Ausbildung) take?

Estimated wait
~3 years
Based on published sources
Timeline guide
  • Faster cases
    ~2.5 years
  • Average cases
    ~3 years
  • Slower cases
    Up to 3.5 years
The 3 years is the standard case — the exact figure is fixed in the occupation's training regulation. A reduction must be applied for jointly by employer and trainee and approved by the competent chamber (IHK/HWK). A university degree or a purely school-based training follows different timelines.

A dual vocational training (Ausbildung) lasts 2, 3 or 3.5 years depending on the occupation — most run for 3 years. The exact length is set nationally in each occupation's training regulation (Ausbildungsordnung) under the Vocational Training Act (BBiG).

More details

With a higher school-leaving certificate, very good results or prior training, the time can be shortened on application by up to 12 months — though a three-year Ausbildung must still last at least 18 months.
