"Authorization Pending" is normal, not a bad sign — but it cannot be expedited. Never buy non-refundable tickets assuming instant approval, and beware third-party lookalike sites charging markups.
Officially, US Customs and Border Protection says ESTA typically returns a status within 72 hours — and if it shows "Authorization Pending", a decision is usually available within those 72 hours. In practice most applications are auto-approved within minutes to a few hours.
More details
There is no way to expedite a pending ESTA, so CBP advises applying as soon as you start planning travel — before booking non-refundable tickets. The official application is only at esta.cbp.dhs.gov ($40).
