How long does the TBE (FSME) vaccine last?

Estimated wait
~4 years
Based on published sources
Timeline guide
  • Faster cases
    ~3.5 years
  • Average cases
    ~4 years
  • Slower cases
    Up to 5 years
The 3–5 years is a deliberately cautious interval, not an exact expiry date. Follow the schedule for your age and region (e.g. RKI/STIKO) and your doctor's advice, especially if you live in or travel to a TBE risk area. Not medical advice.

After the full course, the tick-borne encephalitis (TBE / FSME) vaccine protects for roughly 3 to 5 years. Because the exact duration is not precisely known, the standing vaccination committee recommends a booster every 3 to 5 years for as long as you remain at risk of tick bites — often every 5 years for younger adults and every 3 years from around age 60.

More details

Each booster restores several more years of protection, even if it is given late.
