How long does it take to open a German bank account?

Estimated wait
~1 day

Timeline guide
  • Faster cases
    ~12 hours
  • Average cases
    ~1 day
  • Slower cases
    Up to 2 days
Do not conflate account opening with card delivery — the account (IBAN, online banking, virtual card) is usually live within a day, while the physical card and PIN take one to two weeks in separate mailings. A negative Schufa check can stretch or derail any of these timelines.

With an online application and VideoIdent/eID, a German current account is typically open the same day to within 1–2 business days: N26 states the account is opened in minutes with an instantly usable virtual card, and Sparkasse puts the online application at about ten minutes. The PostIdent branch route (showing your ID at a post office) adds roughly a few working days end-to-end.

More details

The physical girocard and PIN arrive by separate letters, typically several days to two weeks after opening — that is delivery, not account opening. Some banks also hold outgoing transfers briefly at first (DKB: first 48 hours).
