How long does a German pension application take?

Estimated wait
~2 months
Based on published sources
Timeline guide
  • Faster cases
    ~2 months
  • Average cases
    ~2 months
  • Slower cases
    Up to 3 months
Two different "3 months" figures get confused: one is the recommendation to apply ~3 months before retirement (a deadline), the other is the actual processing time. The clock only starts on a complete application — missing IBAN, insurance number or unrecorded periods reset it.

A complete old-age pension application (Altersrente) is typically decided in about 2–3 months: the German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung) reports an average of just under two months, and roughly three months is the common real-world guideline. Reduced-earning-capacity pensions (Erwerbsminderungsrente) and cases that need a medical assessment run substantially longer.

More details

The pension insurance recommends filing about 3 months before your desired start so the first payment is seamless — that is a filing recommendation, not the processing time.
