How long does implantation bleeding last?

Estimated wait
~2 days
Based on published sources
Timeline guide
  • Faster cases
    ~1 day
  • Average cases
    ~2 days
  • Slower cases
    Up to 3 days
If the bleeding lasts more than ~3 days, is heavy, or has clots, it is probably not implantation bleeding — see a doctor. The typical figure is a few hours to about 2 days, not the rare 3-day maximum.

Implantation bleeding typically lasts from a few hours up to about two days, and rarely more than three (Cleveland Clinic). It is light spotting — shorter and much lighter than a normal period, usually with no clots and not enough to soak a pad.

More details

It happens around the time a fertilised egg attaches to the uterus lining, roughly 10–14 days after conception, near when a period would be due.
