Don't confuse the ~1-day egg viability with the ~6-day fertile window — they answer different questions. The fertile window is longer because of sperm survival, not because ovulation itself lasts days.

Ovulation itself is brief: once released, the egg survives only about 12 to 24 hours, and some sources (NICHD) put the fertilizable window as short as 8–12 hours. That short egg-viability window is the honest answer to "how long does ovulation last".

More details

The broader "fertile window" is much longer — roughly 6 days — but only because sperm can survive in the body for up to about 5 days before the egg is even released.
