Rest, cool the area early and manage pain so you can still breathe deeply — shallow breathing to avoid pain can lead to a chest infection. Seek medical care after a hard impact, or if breathing is very painful, you feel breathless, or the pain is severe — that may be a fracture or a deeper injury. General information, not medical advice.
A bruised rib usually heals within about 2 to 4 weeks if you give it enough rest, with the worst pain easing over the first couple of weeks. A mild bruise can settle in 2 to 3 weeks; a more severe one can stay painful for up to about 6 to 8 weeks.
More details
The injury and a cracked rib feel very similar. A true rib fracture (Rippenbruch) generally takes longer — around 6 weeks or more — to heal.
