This covers ordinary muscle soreness after exercise. Pain that comes on suddenly during activity, is sharp or one-sided, or comes with swelling or a visible dent may be a strain or tear rather than DOMS — get that checked. General information, not medical advice.

Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) usually sets in 12 to 72 hours after unfamiliar or hard exercise, peaks at around 24 to 48 hours, and then fades on its own — in most people it is gone within a week. Light movement, warmth and gentle stretching can ease it, but there is no way to make it disappear overnight.

More details

DOMS is a normal sign that the muscle is adapting; it is not a sign of injury.
