- Average cases~30 minutes
- Slower casesUp to 1 hour
These are typical times for pain and fever relief; the anti-inflammatory effect on swelling can take longer and build up over a day or two. Do not exceed the dose on the packet, and speak to a pharmacist or doctor if pain persists. General information, not medical advice.
Ibuprofen taken by mouth usually starts to work within about 20 to 30 minutes, with the strongest effect around 1 to 2 hours after the dose. A single dose then lasts roughly 4 to 6 hours.
More details
Liquid and chewable forms are absorbed a little faster. Taking it on an empty stomach can speed relief slightly but is harder on the stomach, so with ibuprofen it is usually taken with or after food.
