Pain control matters more than rest here: if it hurts too much to breathe deeply, shallow breathing can lead to a chest infection, so take the pain relief you are offered and do the breathing exercises. Seek urgent care for breathlessness, coughing blood, several broken ribs at once, or pain that suddenly worsens. Not to be confused with a bruised rib, which settles faster. General information, not medical advice.
A broken rib normally heals in about 6 to 8 weeks. There is no cast for ribs — the bone knits on its own while you manage the pain. The pain usually peaks in the first two weeks and then eases noticeably from around week three.
More details
Everyday activity is possible early on, but heavy lifting and sport are usually off the table for the first 4 to 6 weeks, and it can take several months before the chest feels fully load-bearing again.
