Mild swelling can linger for two to six months after everything else has healed — that is normal and not a sign the bone failed to knit. A broken big toe carries more weight and is treated more seriously than a small toe. See a doctor if the toe looks crooked, the nail bed is bleeding, or you cannot bear weight — those may need setting. General information, not medical advice.
A broken toe usually heals in about 4 weeks, and is fully knitted after roughly 4 to 6 weeks. A small toe often stops hurting after about 3 weeks. Most breaks need no cast: the toe is taped to its neighbour (buddy taping) or splinted — adults for about 2 to 4 weeks, children for 1 to 2.
More details
Walking normally is usually possible again from the second or third week, while sport is typically back on after about 6 weeks.
