How long does a cold last?

Estimated wait
~10 days

Timeline guide
  • Faster cases
    ~7 days
  • Average cases
    ~10 days
  • Slower cases
    Up to 14 days
A lingering cough (up to ~3 weeks per NHS) is a trailing tail, not the illness itself — the cold is roughly a week. A cough lasting more than 3 weeks is worth seeing a GP about.

A common cold usually clears within about a week and almost always within 1–2 weeks — the NHS says you "begin to feel better in about 1 to 2 weeks", and MedlinePlus puts most cold symptoms at 2 to 14 days.

More details

Symptoms tend to peak in the first few days and then ease. A cough or runny nose can linger after the rest has gone, but that trailing single symptom is not how long the cold itself lasts.
