See a doctor (or call a health line) if diarrhoea lasts more than 7 days, there is blood in it, you have severe tummy pain, or you show signs of serious dehydration such as dizziness, very dark urine or passing little urine. General information, not medical advice.

Most bouts of diarrhoea in adults clear up on their own within a few days — often 2 to 3 days — and almost always within about a week. It is usually caused by a virus or something you ate, and the main risk is losing too much fluid, so drink small sips of water often.

More details

In children and older or frail people, dehydration can develop faster, so watch fluids closely.
