See a doctor if the cough lasts more than 3 weeks, keeps getting worse, or comes with coughing up blood, chest pain, breathlessness or a high temperature. General information, not medical advice.

A cough from a cold or other viral infection usually clears within about 3 weeks without any treatment. A post-viral cough is common and can linger for 2 to 8 weeks after the infection itself has gone, because the airways stay irritated for a while — this is annoying but usually harmless.

More details

A cough that lasts longer than 8 weeks is called chronic and should be checked by a doctor.
