    ~10 days
  • Slower cases
    Up to 14 days
Cough and fatigue lingering for weeks are a trailing tail, not the typical course — the acute flu is roughly 1–2 weeks. Symptoms that worsen or do not improve after about a week warrant medical advice.

Flu symptoms typically last about one to two weeks. The CDC says most people "recover in a few days to less than two weeks", and MedlinePlus puts the main symptoms at 7 to 14 days, with fever usually breaking in 3–4 days.

More details

The flu comes on faster and hits harder than a cold. A cough and a run-down, tired feeling can drag on for weeks afterwards, especially in older adults — but that tail is not the core illness.
