IMPORTANT: If you drink heavily or every day, do not stop abruptly on your own. Severe alcohol withdrawal (confusion, seizures, hallucinations, a racing heart — delirium tremens) is a medical emergency and can be fatal without treatment. Speak to a doctor first — withdrawal can be done safely with medical support and medication. General information, not medical advice.

Physical alcohol withdrawal usually lasts about 7 to 10 days, with the worst symptoms in the first 4 to 5 days. The first signs — shaking, sweating, restlessness, anxiety — typically begin 4 to 12 hours after the last drink.

More details

This is different from clearing alcohol from the blood. Unlike many other withdrawals, alcohol withdrawal can be medically dangerous: in a minority of dependent drinkers it leads to seizures or delirium tremens, which is life-threatening.
