Sow basil thinly and do not bury it deep — sown too deep it simply will not appear, which is the single most common reason for a failed tray. Keep the compost damp but not wet; basil seedlings are prone to damping off in cold, soggy conditions.
Basil is one of the quickest herbs from seed: green shoots normally appear in 5 to 7 days, and up to about 10 days in cooler conditions. It wants warmth, ideally around 20–25 °C, and only a very light covering of compost — the seed is tiny and should be barely buried.

Once up, basil grows fast but resents cold. Seedlings kept below about 12 °C stall, yellow and rarely make good plants, so there is nothing gained by sowing too early in the year.
