Do not mow on a calendar date — mow when the turf resists being lifted. Cutting too early tears the sheets apart before the roots have taken, and that damage does not grow out. When you do mow, take off no more than a third of the leaf.
New turf puts down its first shallow roots in 10 to 14 days — at that point a gentle tug should meet resistance, and that is the signal for the first mow, typically 2 to 3 weeks after laying. Deeper structural roots follow over 4 to 6 weeks, and the lawn is fully established at roughly 6 to 8 weeks.

Until the tug test passes, keep off it as much as possible and water daily; new turf dries out from underneath long before the surface looks dry.
