If the joint is not properly rested, or the inflammation keeps coming back, it can become chronic and take months to settle — and needs medical assessment. See a doctor if pain is severe, there is marked swelling or redness, or it does not improve with rest. General information, not medical advice.

With proper rest, an acute tendon sheath inflammation (tenosynovitis, Sehnenscheidenentzündung) usually settles within about 1 to 2 weeks. Resting and relieving the affected joint — often with a splint in the first few days — is the single most important step and lowers the risk of it becoming chronic.

More details

If the strain continues and the tendon is not rested, healing can drag on for several weeks to months.
