A hangover is not the same as alcohol withdrawal or alcohol poisoning — those are more serious and last differently. If someone can't be woken or is breathing abnormally after drinking, that is an emergency.

A hangover typically resolves on its own within about 24 hours — "most hangovers are gone within 24 hours," per MedlinePlus. Symptoms tend to peak as your blood alcohol level returns to around zero (NIAAA).

More details

Heavier drinking sessions can drag the symptoms out to 24 hours or a little longer, but roughly a day is the norm. There is no cure but time; water and painkillers only ease the symptoms.
