  • Slower cases

Grade matters enormously: a mild sprain is days-to-2-weeks, a full ligament tear is months. And "feels fine" ≠ healed — the ligament is still weak for ~8 weeks; going back to sport too early is how ankles become chronically unstable.

A mild ankle sprain heals in about 1–2 weeks; the NHS says most sprains feel better after 2 weeks. Moderate sprains need roughly 4–6 weeks, and severe sprains (a complete ligament tear) commonly take 6–12 weeks and can take months, especially with surgery.

More details

Pain and swelling usually improve within the first 48 hours with rest, ice, compression and elevation. Feeling better is not the same as being healed: the NHS advises avoiding strenuous exercise for up to 8 weeks, because re-spraining a half-healed ankle is the main cause of chronic instability.

How the process works

  1. 1Injury — swelling, RICE (first 48 h)
  2. 2Mild sprain: back to normal (a few days–2 weeks)
  3. 3Typical recovery (2–6 weeks) ↑ the time on this page
  4. 4Severe tears: strenuous sport only after 8+ weeks; full recovery can take months
