The short 1–3 day illness is not the same as the contagious period — you can shed norovirus in stool for 2+ weeks after you feel better. Watch for dehydration rather than counting days.
For norovirus — the usual "stomach bug" — most people are sick for just 1 to 3 days and recover fully without treatment, per the CDC. Other viral causes run longer: the NIH puts rotavirus at 3–8 days and adenovirus at up to 1–2 weeks, so the exact length depends on the specific virus.
