The return to sport should be decided by functional tests with your physiotherapist, not by the calendar alone — and in some cases full recovery takes up to two years. Not every cruciate tear is operated on; conservative treatment follows a different timeline. General information, not medical advice.

Recovery from a torn cruciate ligament takes on average about 6 to 12 months, and the rehabilitation matters as much as the surgery. The stages come gradually: walking without crutches is often possible after 2 to 4 weeks, light running from around 12 weeks, and a full return to contact sport such as football or basketball usually only after 9 to 12 months.

A graft needs at least nine months to knit in properly, which is why returning to pivoting sport earlier carries a real re-injury risk.
