How long does grout take to dry?

Estimated wait
~3 days

Timeline guide
  • Faster cases
    ~1 day
  • Average cases
    ~3 days
  • Slower cases
    Up to 7 days
Product type changes everything: rapid-set (calcium-aluminate) and standard Portland grouts differ by an order of magnitude. Cold (<10 °C), high humidity or excess cleanup water lengthen the cure and can weaken or discolour joints.

Standard cement grout takes light foot traffic after about 24 hours and needs roughly 72 hours of protected cure before normal use — Custom Building Products' TDS for a standard sanded grout specifies at least 72 hours above 10 °C, and 7 days before exterior water exposure. Rapid-setting grouts like Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA take foot traffic in just 3–4 hours and are pool-ready after 72 hours.

More details

Sealing, where needed, is typically done after the 48–72 hour cure. Like all cement products, full strength is benchmarked at 28 days.

How the process works

  1. 1Grouting done
  2. 2Light foot traffic (3–24 h depending on product)
  3. 3Protected cure (~72 h) ↑ the time on this page
  4. 4Water contact / submersion OK (3–7 days)
