How long does paint take to dry?

Estimated wait
~3 hours
Based on published sources
Timeline guide
  • Faster cases
    ~2 hours
  • Average cases
    ~3 hours
  • Slower cases
    Up to 4 hours
These figures assume ~20–25 °C and ~50% humidity — cooler air, high humidity, thick coats and dark colours extend every stage. Recoating before the stated recoat time can lift or wrinkle the first coat.

For common interior water-based (latex) wall paint at around 20–25 °C and ~50% humidity, expect it to be dry to the touch in about 1 hour and safe to recoat in roughly 2 to 4 hours, according to manufacturer data sheets (Sherwin-Williams, Behr, Dulux).

More details

Drying to the touch is not the same as fully cured: the film keeps hardening and is not truly scrubbable or furniture-safe for about 2 weeks. Oil-based paints run much slower — dry to touch in ~6–8 hours, recoat after ~24 hours.

How the process works

  1. 1Dry to the touch (~1 hour)
  2. 2Safe to recoat (2–4 hours) ↑ the time on this page
  3. 3Fully cured — scrubbable, furniture-safe (~2 weeks)
