How long does nail polish take to dry?

Estimated wait
~25 minutes
Based on published sources
By case
  • Faster cases
    ~17 minutes
  • Average cases
    ~25 minutes
  • Slower cases
    Up to 2 hours
The classic mistake is trusting the surface. Polish that feels dry will still take a sheet imprint or dent from a car key an hour later, so avoid anything fiddly for a couple of hours. High humidity keeps polish tacky for longer. General information.

Regular nail polish is touch-dry after roughly 20 to 30 minutes — quick-dry formulas manage it in 5 to 10. But touch-dry is deceptive: underneath, the layers stay soft and can still dent for up to about 2 hours.

More details

Thin coats dry far faster than thick ones, and dark, heavily pigmented shades take longer than pale ones. Gel polish is different again: it cures under an LED lamp in under a minute.
