How long does strep throat last?

The 10-day antibiotic course is not how long you feel ill — you usually feel better well before it ends, but stopping early risks complications. Untreated strep can last longer and stays contagious.

Strep throat symptoms most often get better in about a week, and with antibiotics the worst is usually gone within a few days — MedlinePlus notes symptoms often ease within a few days of starting treatment. Most sore throats overall settle within a week (NHS).

More details

You are generally no longer contagious after 12–24 hours on antibiotics, but the full course (usually 10 days) must still be finished to prevent complications such as rheumatic fever.
