Every formula differs — never assume one brand's times apply to another, and read the tin. Humidity, cold and a heavy coat all stretch these figures substantially, and a stain applied too thickly may stay tacky indefinitely rather than simply drying slowly.
For most oil-based wood stains you can apply a second coat after about 4 to 6 hours, while water-based stains are dry in roughly 1 hour. Minwax advises waiting 8 to 10 hours between coats on its oil-based stains, and a full 24 hours before you seal.

Full cure is slower still: a stained surface typically needs 24 to 72 hours before it is ready for real use. Outdoor deck stain on pressure-treated timber dries in 4 to 8 hours but cures over 24 to 48 hours.
