Acute laryngitis usually lasts about 1 to 3 weeks. The symptoms improve noticeably after roughly 3 to 7 days, and the voice is normally fully back within one to two weeks.

It is most often viral, so antibiotics do not help. Resting the voice — not whispering, which strains it more than quiet speech — and avoiding smoke and dry air are what actually shorten it.
